e-Boks provides access to 15 million users for the EU digital highway

The startup dewa and e-Boks, a global provider of secure digital communication solutions, have announced a strategic partnership to launch an advanced digital identity solution, enabling EU citizens to securely identify themselves, sign documents digitally, and store personal certificates and documents across borders. This solution is the first of its kind to be introduced in Denmark.
dewa was founded in October 2024 by Lorenz Carl Flechtenmacher and Thomas Gammelby Lodberg. The two met at DTU, where the idea for developing a digital identity wallet was born.
In 2023, Copenhagen Fintech introduced the project to DTU X-Tech, where dewa developed its first MVP for a student identity card. The startup later won the X-Tech+ grand prize for best innovation.
Co-founder and CEO Lorenz Carl Flechtenmacher is originally from Germany and studies at Technische Universität München. Co-founder and CTO Thomas Gammelby Lodberg is completing his studies at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

For several years, the European Parliament has been working on establishing a framework for a new digital ID solution, allowing European citizens to verify their identity, sign agreements, and log into digital services across EU member states.
The final EU requirements, adopted in spring 2024, mandate that all member states must offer at least one digital identity wallet by 2026. This wallet will provide citizens and businesses with a secure, standardized way to authenticate themselves digitally across the EU—similar to Denmark’s MitID. It will also allow users to store digital versions of important personal documents, such as driver’s licenses, health cards, and other credentials.
Now, dewa is set to launch the first Danish-developed wallet, fully compatible with the European blockchain EBSI. Designed to function seamlessly across all EU member states, the solution ensures that users retain full control over their data in compliance with EU regulations. Additionally, the wallet will enable e-Boks to issue credentials that can be used for age verification in online transactions and other digital services.
dewa was founded by engineers Lorenz Carl Flechtenmacher from Technische Universität München and Thomas Gammelby Lodberg from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Their collaboration with e-Boks began after a meeting at Nordic Fintech Week, where they presented their idea for a digital identity wallet during a panel discussion.
"We attended Nordic Fintech Week in 2023 and were inspired to create a business with a vision beyond Denmark’s borders. When we returned in 2024 as an established startup, we met e-Boks, and that changed our perspective. We saw the potential in combining e-Boks’ market position in secure digital communication with our technological expertise," says Lorenz Carl Flechtenmacher, co-founder & CEO of dewa.

Ulrik Falkner ThagesenCEO at e-Boks
“Our digital identity wallet can fill this gap—not only by storing certificates and documents but also by providing a secure, standardized way to access digital services across borders.”
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is the first institution in Denmark to test the new digital identity wallet.
At e-Boks CEO Ulrik Falkner Thagesen sees great potential in the partnership:
- We have been actively engaging with innovative ecosystems, including DTU and Copenhagen Fintech, and this collaboration demonstrates the exciting opportunities such efforts can unlock. dewa has identified a major potential in the next generation of digital identity and has developed a solution that meets upcoming EU requirements. At e-Boks, we bring decades of expertise in secure digital communication and a robust organizational structure that can help scale this solution internationally. He adds:
- This solution will undoubtedly open new markets for us both within and beyond the EU. We see particular opportunities in the financial sector and education institutions. Many countries lack an official and verified digital login system like Denmark’s MitID. Our digital identity wallet can fill this gap—not only by storing certificates and documents but also by providing a secure, standardized way to access digital services across borders.
Due to the strong synergies in the partnership, e-Boks is also considering to invest in dewa.
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) will be the first institution in Denmark to pilot the new digital identity wallet. As part of the project, students will gain access to a digital student ID, which can supplement or replace physical ID cards. The pilot will explore how the digital solution can be integrated into daily campus life, including access to facilities, exam registration, and other student services.
DTU’s Executive Vice President for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Marianne Thellersen, is looking forward to the project’s outcomes:
- At DTU, we have followed dewa’s journey from idea to reality, including their participation in our startup incubator, DTU X-Tech Entrepreneurship, where they won the main prize in 2024. dewa is a prime example of the innovation we strive to foster among our students. We are also excited to use our campus as a living lab and collaborate with dewa to test this technology, which has the potential to make student life easier while contributing to the essential protection of all Europeans’ digital identities.
The new wallet, named e-Wallet, will be available for download on the App Store and Google Play from March 2025.
EU member states have agreed to create a unified European digital identity wallet, which will allow Danish and other EU citizens to identify themselves and sign documents online across the EU.
The agreement requires all EU countries to provide citizens with a digital ID wallet. This wallet will enable users to authenticate their identity for public and private digital services within the EU and digitally sign documents. It will also store other verified digital credentials, such as a digital driver’s license or academic certificates. Once securely stored in the wallet, these credentials will be valid across all EU member states.
According to the European Commission, 80% of EU citizens are expected to have access to a digital identity wallet by 2030, creating an urgent need for solutions that combine high security with user-friendliness.
dewa and e-Boks’ new digital identity wallet, e-Wallet, is designed with:
Security and Privacy: Compliant with EU regulations, ensuring users have full control over their data.
User-Friendliness: An intuitive platform that provides seamless access to digital identities and certificates.
Interoperability: Built to function across EU member states in line with the upcoming eIDAS 2.0 regulation.
In addition to the identity wallet itself, dewa and e-Boks are also launching services for issuing and verifying digital credentials.
