Rise in Cyber Threats Increase the Need for e-Boks’ Services
A sharp rise in phishing attempts via regular emails and other cyber threats has made users more skeptical about the communication they receive, e.g., traditional emails, text messages on their phones and similar. As a result, secure digital communication is becoming an increasingly relevant service. Anders Ørding Olsen, CCO of e-Boks, provides an update on the latest market trends.

e-Boks
Can I trust the link in the email I just received? Is it safe to use email when my bank requests sensitive financial information, healthcare professionals send details about my health, future employers send test results and personality profiles, with no guarantee of who is on the receiving end? And do I feel comfortable knowing my emails are stored in an account managed by large international tech companies?
These are just some of the growing concerns among citizens as news about phishing and hacking become more frequent.
– Overall, we see increasing public uncertainty about cyber threats and whom to trust in the digital space. This triggers more discussions about secure communication. Our corporate customers at e-Boks are also digital users themselves. They have all received phishing emails and are familiar with these challenges in their daily lives, making this a highly relevant topic, explains Anders Ørding Olsen, CCO of e-Boks.
He continues:
– It is damaging for any brand to create insecurity among its customers through its communication. However, in today’s reality, more and more brands are doing just that—whether they are banks or law firms. This happens either because they have not considered the security risks of sending emails or because their identity has been copied and misused for phishing attacks.
In 2025, e-Boks will continue to develop new services to make the platform attractive for even more use cases, both internationally and within the Nordic home market.
– Too many critical digital documents are still being delivered through unsecured channels. As awareness of cyber risks grows, we will need to reconsider where and how sensitive information is shared. A responsible company would never leave a physical letter containing confidential information outside your front door where others can read it. Yet, metaphorically speaking, that is exactly what happens with the use of traditional emails in many cases today.

Across Sectors and Borders
According to Anders Ørding Olsen, the heightened threat landscape has increased interest in secure communication solutions, with both new and existing customers turning to e-Boks.
– Senders want to avoid reputational damage to their brand, and they see us as a safe, cost effective and reliable alternative. This applies to both small and large customers across various sectors, in the Nordic home market as well as internationally, he emphasises.
– Even in countries where secure digital post solutions are not yet well-established, there is a growing expectation from citizens and demand from authorities to address the issues arising from technology. This leads to more mature discussions. In several cases, postal service operators are seen as the natural providers of secure digital post solutions, and e-Boks is often invited as a thought leader to help shape the conversation and explore potential solutions.
e-Boks is a member of the international organisation Universal Postal Union, which brings together private and public stakeholders in the postal sector. Olsen and his colleagues have been invited to speak at multiple international conferences. Additionally, Danish expertise in secure digital post has generated interest within the UN, where discussions are underway on how countries with less developed infrastructure can establish shared communication solutions.
– Driving fundamental digital change at a societal level is complex because it involves multiple system dependencies. A secure post solution, for example, requires a national standard for secure digital identification. This makes the process intricate and time-consuming – it’s not just a matter of introducing new technology. However, the pace at which new business opportunities in this space are emerging is accelerating rapidly. More stakeholders now recognise the need for action, whether in Europe, South America, or Southeast Asia, he explains.
A Strong Home Market Continues to Grow
e-Boks has maintained a strong position in Denmark, and despite the availability of other secure post solutions, the majority of citizens and businesses continue to rely on e-Boks as their preferred choice.
– In 2024, we have maintained a solid position with banks and have seen growth in sectors such as insurance and pension. Even in areas like debt collection communications where users are not too enthusiastic about receiving messages, many still prefer e-Boks because they trust it. This also means that users engage with and respond to the communications they receive, leading to agreements with creditors.
According to Anders Ørding Olsen, e-Boks continues to explore new sectors where secure digital post can add value. New services and regulatory changes have helped open doors in several industries.
– Recently, we have experienced significant growth among NGOs and in the utilities sector. These industries are facing increasing security requirements for their communication solutions. Additionally, NGOs have been particularly affected by rising costs for physical letters. At the same time, we have introduced a solution that enables organisations to send secure post without requiring the recipient’s CPR number. Our ability to identify and respond to these market trends has contributed to strong results, and we expect 2025 to be even better, he says.
New EU Digital Identity Wallet in 2025
One of the key initiatives targeting EU countries is the requirement to offer citizens a digital identity wallet. To address this market opportunity e-Boks is launching in collaboration with the startup dewa.
Under new EU regulations introduced in early 2024, all member states must offer at least one digital identity wallet by 2026. This wallet will provide citizens and businesses with a secure, standardised way to verify their identity across the EU. It will also enable the storage of digital versions of important documents, such as driving licences, health insurance cards, and other personal credentials.
dewa’s solution is the first Danish-developed proposal for the EU wallet. It is built on the European blockchain infrastructure EBSI, ensuring compatibility across all EU member states while giving users full control over their data in compliance with EU regulations. dewa’s solution will be the first of its kind launched in Denmark and will adhere to the preliminary EU requirements.
