e-Boks brings a new ID and login solution to the pockets of 5 million Danes

The market for digital ID solutions is now opening up to more providers as a result of new EU legislation.

e-Boks is ready with a new ID and login solution that can challenge both MitID (Denmark’s national digital ID for secure online authentication) and other login options from, for example, Facebook and Google. 100,000 Danes have already downloaded the new ID solution.

eIDAS 2.0

comes fully into force in September 2027, and that means a wider range of digital ID solutions in the future.

Digital ID and login solutions are becoming an increasingly important part of our digital lives when we log in to online banking, check the preliminary tax assessment with Skat (Denmark’s tax authority), shop online, or watch TV and streaming services. In recent years, Danes have had several generations of official ID solutions in their hands, first NemID (the predecessor of MitID) and then MitID. But based on a new EU regulation, eIDAS 2.0, which comes fully into force in September 2027, there is now the prospect of a broader selection of ID solutions in the future.

e-Boks is already ready with a new ID solution that Danes can use for identification both offline and online, including for secure logins to digital services. The new initiative comes after e-Boks’ recent acquisition of the start up company dewa. e-Boks ID is built on technology from dewa, the company behind the first identity wallet developed in Denmark. According to the company’s CEO, e-Boks ID fills a gap in the market.

“We are seeing significant growth in the need for ID and login solutions. Today, Danes encounter many different login options, including from American tech companies such as Facebook and Google, without always having insight into how their data is used. This calls for a trustworthy, data secure solution where users have full control. With e-Boks ID, we also contribute to the European ambition for greater digital sovereignty and more secure alternatives on the market.”

The solution is integrated into the e-Boks app, which almost all Danes already use, making login both simpler and more secure, says Ulrik Falkner Thagesen, CEO of e-Boks.

An attractive alternative for businesses

According to the CEO, e-Boks ID will not only be attractive for end users because of its high ease of use, but also for the providers that need to offer login to their websites. This is partly because the price per login with e-Boks ID is close to half that of, for example, MitID.

Niels Frimodt Sørensen, Director of Signaturgruppen, which has been a central part of Denmark’s electronic identity solutions for 20 years and is the leading provider of MitID solutions, says:
“We look forward to also being able to offer e-Boks ID to our customers alongside, among others, MitID. It creates interesting opportunities for service providers, which we look forward to discussing with them.”

As an additional benefit, businesses will, with the user’s consent, in time also be able to access updated address and telephone details. This will make the work of maintaining master data significantly easier, for example for insurance and pension companies, as well as utility and telecom companies.

Also a separate proof of age

e-Boks ID will also be supplemented with a standalone digital proof of age, a feature e-Boks expects will become increasingly important as legislation becomes stricter. The digital proof of age can be used for secure age verification without sharing more personal data than necessary.

The digital proof of age can be used to confirm a user’s age in situations where age limits apply. This could be, for example, when purchasing age restricted goods online, accessing digital services with age requirements, or creating profiles on platforms where certain age rules apply.

The solution can also be used in physical situations, such as entry to events or venues with age limits, for example nightclubs.

“In a number of the areas where age verification will be relevant, there is a need for updated legislation that reflects the digital reality we live in today. But we have the proof of age ready now, and more than 100,000 users have already downloaded it. So as legislation enables shops and the nightlife to use the new ID solutions, we are ready to roll it out further,” Ulrik Falkner Thagesen concludes.
